Let's be honest — weeknights in North Texas are busy. Between soccer practice, work deadlines, and everything in between, the last thing most families want to do at 6 p.m. is figure out dinner. That's exactly why meal prepping on Sunday is one of the single most powerful nutrition habits I recommend to every client.
You don't need to spend all day in the kitchen. With the right system, you can set your family up for a full week of balanced, delicious meals in about 90 minutes. Here are five ideas that work for real North Texas life.
1. Sheet-Pan Proteins
Choose one or two proteins — chicken thighs, salmon fillets, or lean ground turkey — and roast them on a sheet pan at 400°F while you do everything else. Season simply with olive oil, garlic, salt, and your favorite spice blend. These proteins become the base for bowls, wraps, salads, and stir-fries all week.
Janna's Tip: Make two flavors of chicken at once — one savory Italian, one with a light taco seasoning — so meals feel different each night without extra effort.
2. A Big Batch of Whole Grains
Cook a large pot of brown rice, quinoa, or farro on Sunday. These complex carbs keep well in the fridge for 5 days and form a satisfying, fiber-rich base for any meal. Mix in a drizzle of olive oil and a pinch of salt after cooking to keep them from clumping.
- Brown rice — great with stir-fry or alongside proteins
- Quinoa — complete protein, perfect for grain bowls
- Farro — nutty flavor, amazing in salads
3. Pre-Cut Veggies and a Dip
Wash, peel, and cut a variety of vegetables — bell peppers, carrots, cucumber, broccoli — and store them in individual containers. Pair with a store-bought or homemade hummus. This takes under 20 minutes and eliminates the biggest barrier to eating more vegetables: convenience.
Pre-cut veggies also double as fast additions to dinners, omelets, and wraps throughout the week.
4. Overnight Oats for the Whole Family
Make 4–5 jars of overnight oats on Sunday evening. Combine rolled oats, milk (dairy or plant-based), chia seeds, and a touch of honey in each jar. In the morning, top with fresh berries, banana slices, or a spoon of nut butter. Kids love customizing their own toppings.
Janna's Tip: Use Mason jars and let your kids pick their own toppings ahead of time. It builds ownership over healthy choices — and makes mornings drama-free.
5. A Big Pot of Soup or Chili
Soups and chilis are nutritional powerhouses — they pack in vegetables, legumes, and lean protein in one pot. Make a large batch Sunday afternoon and portion it into lunch containers. A simple white chicken chili, lentil soup, or turkey chili reheats beautifully and keeps kids and adults satisfied for hours.
Soups also freeze well, so double your recipe and store half in the freezer for a future busy week when cooking isn't an option.
Putting It All Together
The key to successful meal prep isn't cooking everything from scratch — it's creating components that mix and match. With a prepped protein, a grain, and some vegetables, your family has dozens of meal combinations without the weeknight stress.
